Things to do in North East India

In continuation with the earlier post on top things to do in North East India, which appeared on Indian Holiday's travel blog, we bring to you some more ideas on planning your holidays in North East, one of the most pristine and culturally rich regions in India.

For inspirations’ sake Let us begin with a wonderful quote
“A good traveler has no fixed plans and does not intent on arriving”- Lao Tzu
A visit to ‘The Land of Seven Sisters’ will certainly make you believe that this is true. With handful of population and several remote regions, it is often considered as the tribal region of India.

There are wonderful treks to verdant jungles & Himalayas, natural caves, cascading waterfalls, living root bridges, spectacular Buddhist monasteries, abundant wildlife and the thriving culture that makes North East India one of the best and relatively unexplored destinations to go for holidays in India.

Although the mountainous scenery is arresting, the northeast region remains the least visited part of India. Internal conflicts between communities in North East India, along with its sensitive location bordering Bhutan, China and Myanmar, remain an issue.

Avoid visiting North East during monsoon as the region is lashed by heavy rain. You could plan a visit to North East for summer holidays and these days this region is also becoming a popular destination for honeymoon in India. During winter, you could experience snow too at some of the high altitude destinations. Several treks could be undertaken in North East as well as road trips if you are an adventure enthusiast.

Here are 10 more things to do in North East India for a fulfilling vacation

One of the most beautiful and photogenic falls in India, the Nohkalikai Falls tumbles down from a height of 335 meters. It is just a 10 minute drive from the main town of Cherrapunji. The fall is located at another blunt end of the plateau. From the periphery of the cliff, the waterfall appears like a large white rope in a sea of green forests. Ironically, every beautiful place got its popularity after a sad story.

A woman named Ka Likai remarried a man but her second husband became jealous for treating her daughter with so much love, perhaps more than him. One day while she was away at work, her husband cooked the girl and served it to her. After she finished her food, she started looking out for her baby girl. She looked everywhere, but sadly she found only a little finger of her daughter in a betel nut basket. Heartbroken to know what her husband did, she jumped off the fall and the fall came to be known as “Nohkalikai”, which is literally translated as ‘Jump of Ka Likai’.

The entry fee for Nohkalikai Falls is Rs. 10.

Well but then again how many of us know that some of the must visit and awe inspiring tourist places in India are in Tamil Nadu. Tranquil hill stations, sandy beaches, spectacular temples, verdant tea plantations, churches, museums, “toy train” and what not. You name it and we bet you’ll find it in Tamil Nadu.

Without much argument or fuss, we state top 3 reasond to visit Tamil Nadu: temples, temples and temples.

Surprised…are you?

Now consider this…this state in South India has over 33,000 temples most of whom are over 800-1200 years old. It won’t be an overstatement to state at this point that Tamil Nadu happens to be the cradle of Dravidian Culture.

Meenakshi Amman temple is to South India what Taj Mahal is to North India. 12 gopurams or the sculpture studded chambers filled with statues of gods and demons are a sight to behold. Located in Madurai and built to honor goddess Meenakshi (a form of Parvati), the temple offers a rich insight into the Dravidian Culture.

Then there are UNESCO inscribed World Heritage Sites which includes 3 of the Great Living Chola Temples (Thanjavur, Gangaikonda Cholapuram and Darasuram) and The Group of Monuments in Mahabalipuram (now Mamallapuram) which again are repository of the ancient Dravidian culture.

Classical music, dance forms and other cultural activities in Tamil Nadu form major appeal for tourism in the state.

Then there are some picturesque and serene hill stations which are at their verdant best without much traffic making it perfect for you to enjoy the pastoral beauty of the places. And that also happens to be the reason why we have included Tamil Nadu in our list of top places to visit in India in October.

On top of our hill stations in Tamil Nadu to visit in October list is Ooty. One of the oomph factors that make traveling to Ooty so special is the Nilgiri Mountain Railways or the “toy train.” Some of the must visit hill stations in Tamil Nadu along with Ooty are Kodaikanal, and Yercaud.

Good news if you are reading this list of top places to visit in India in October is that Sikkim is one of those places.

So first we have something for adventure seekers!

The rewards of undertaking this challenging trekking in Sikkim are numerous. The awesome vistas and later panoramas of rhododendron laden forests, mighty rivers and towering snowcapped mountain peaks of Himalayas conjure a magical sight. Goecha Peak is considered to be the best place - if you are not on top of the actual one - for sighting the third highest mountain peak in the world Mt Khangchendzonga.

The day hikes and short walks truly bring out the natural splendor and rustic charm of this unspoiled Himalayan region to its fore. Take a hike from Rabangla to Mainom which is a one day easy to moderate climb or opt for the Damthang (1650 m) to Tendong (2600 m) hike in South Sikkim.

In the West Sikkim try the easy half day nature walk Hillay (2750 m) to Barsey 3000 m) or embark on the monastic trail from Pemayangtse to Sangacholling Monastery. Day walk from Yuksom to Khecheopalri Lake and Tashiding are particularly picturesque and romantic as well if you are traveling in Western Sikkim.

Rhododendren Trek, Barsey in Sikkim

Looking for cultural interactions?

Sikkim is ideally suited to travelers looking for insights into Tibetan Buddhism. A visit to Namgyal Institute for Tibetology in Gangtok will open up the cultural forms and rituals of Vajrayana Buddhism and give you a peek into the Tibetan Buddism and its practices.

A trip to Namgyal Institute of Tibetology is all the more vital and should be on your list of things to do in Sikkim as it also houses museums. Relics and objet d’art belonging to Tibetan iconography and religious arts are definitely worth a peek. Packed with thangkas, statues, ancient manuscripts dating back to 11th Century and ritualistic objects, this is a cultural treasure trove of Tibetan lifestyle.

With more than 200 monasteries sprinkled across this tiny Himalayan kingdom, you will have your fill of religion and Buddhism. Some of the most stupendous and important monasteries in Sikkim are the Rumtek and Enchey Monastery in Gangtok, Pemayangtse Monastery near Pelling in West Sikkim and the Karma Kagyu Monastery in Phodong in North Sikkim.

Last but not the least, if you are planning your holiday in Sikkim, we’d definitely recommend that you don’t miss out on a day excursion from Gangtok to Tsogmo Lake, a high altitude lake located at an altitude of 3780 meters.
