Roots of the International Mango Festival in Delhi

The International Mango Festival was first started in 1987. The Delhi Tourism and Govt. of NCT of Delhi in association with the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), the National Horticultural Board (NHB) and the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) organized an event to put spotlight on India’s favorite fruit in the capital city, Delhi.

In 2016, the horticulture department of the West Bengal government and the food processing industries of the state have also contributed to the event. The Mango festival will promote trading of the fruit from all across the world. This festival is also a good platform for the farmers mainly from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Gujarat and Delhi to get an interaction with the consumers and the agents. There will be exhibits around 1100 varieties of mangoes from different Indian states.

When is the International Mango Festival?

Every year the date of the International Mango Festival changes. It is generally celebrated in the summer months of June or July. In 2016, the celebration of the tropical fruits is on 9th and 10th July.

International Mango Festival Highlights

The Mango Festival is the celebration of the tropical fruit. At the festival, visitors can enjoy the sight, aroma and taste of more than 1100 varieties. The most popular names including Alphonso, Totapari, Mallika, Rataul, Himsagar, Amrapali, Mumbai Green, Kesar, Fazli and Banganpalli etc.

Some interesting varieties are Neeleshwari, Sikri, Royal SP, Suwarn, Himsagar, Raddy Pasand, Banganpally, Kensington, Dushehari, Langda, Chausa, Malda, Neelam, Papitiyo, Langra, Kesar, Sensation, Nazuk Badab, Fazli, Tommy Atkins and Amrapali.

From the Kaleemullah Khan’s nursery, varieties of mangoes like Aishwarya, Bombay Green, and Abdullah are brought here. One of the rare species of mangoes are Gula by Tariq Mustafa from Purkazi in Muzaffarnagar.

The festival also features some specialties of chefs’ recipes of mangoes. Reputed chefs share the recipes of different kinds of mango-based gastronomy. You can taste their delicacies and learn the secret of creating one finger-licking mango dish at home. From dessert, shakes, ice-cream to other delicacies, mango can easily be combined in your cuisine.

What to Do?

To make it like a full-fledged mango party for observers, different competitions are also held amid mango growers. Mango eating competitions, mango quiz, children’s shows and mango folk performances make the celebration an ornamented sight to behold.

Last but not least, the festival encourages vigorous trading of the fruit too. Products like mango pulp, Aam panna, juice, Aam papad, pickles, jelly, fresh mangoes, and chutneys are available on sale. Take home your favorites at amazing prices.
