First Ever International Yoga Day to be observed on June 21, 2015

Sanctioned by United Nations, the first International day of Yoga will take place on 21st June 2015. The day will celebrate Yoga, which is a 6000 year old mental and spiritual practice that aims to transform the body and mind of an individual.

On 27th December 2014, the Prime Minister of India, Mr. Narendra Modi, while addressing the UN General Assembly said, "Yoga is an invaluable gift of India's ancient tradition. It embodies unity of mind and body; thought and action; restraint and fulfillment; harmony between man and nature; a holistic approach to health and well-being. It is not about exercise but to discover the sense of oneness with yourself, the world and the nature. By changing our lifestyle and creating consciousness, it can help us deal with climate change. Let us work towards adopting an International Yoga Day.”

Yoga teaches us to cure what cannot be endured and endure what cannot be cured
While suggesting the date June 21 as the International Day of Yoga, Mr. Narendra Modi said that it is the longest day in the Northern Hemisphere and it holds special significance in different parts of the world.

Later, India’s permanent representative introduced the draft resolution to UNGA. UN General Assembly adopted this India-led resolution and declared June 21 as 'International Day of Yoga', recognizing that "Yoga provides a holistic approach to health and well-being.”

After the idea of 'International Day of Yoga' was proposed to UNGA, 175 nations joined as co-sponsors. This was the highest number for any General Assembly resolution. Also, it was the first time that an initiative like this was proposed and implemented in the UN body in less than 90 days. The resolution was adopted under the agenda of 'Global Health and Foreign Policy’.

With this decision, Government of India is planning to celebrate International Day of Yoga 2015 all around the world. Also, Embassy of India is planning to organize a number of events to celebrate International Day of Yoga on June 21, 2015.
